This study aims to reveal the meanings and massage contained in the Shalwat Kemerdekaan poem by KH. R. Asnawi using Roland Barthes Semotic approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with Barthes framework of semotic analysis. As part of intellectual legacy of Indonesian muslim scolars, the poem contains layered meaning. This study, the meaning and massage are identified through three elements: denotative meaning, wich refers to the literal notion of independence as experienced by Indonesian people at the time. Conotative meaning wich expand the concept of independence to encompass freedom, prosperity and justice. And myth, which in this poem is associated with the ideology of Pancasila. The first to the fifth principles of Pancasila correspond to themes of religious spirituality, moral victory, nationalism or love for the homeland, the welfare of the people, and justice (including the eradication of colonial oppression, economic development, and poverty alleviation). This study offers of new prespective on the discours of nationalism and Islam Nusantara by demonstrating the harmoinous integration between Islamic and Indonesian Identity that has rarely been studied before.
